On this 21st day of our vacation it’s time to go back home. Our first flights leaves at 11:50 from Orlando International Airport towards Detroit. Since both of our suitcases where a bit overweight we decided to leave as soon as we were done showering and packing the last couple items. At 8:40 we left the Staybridge Suites in Lake Buena Vista and headed to the airport with avoiding the toll-roads.
At 9:25 we dropped of our SUV at Alamo and as expect no additional costs and at 9:30 we were already dropping of our luggage at the Delta Check-out. And both our suitcases were 3 pounds to heavy (about 1,5 kilo) and we needed to re-pack our stuff, which we did and we managed to get even more stuff in our carry-on items, both suitcases almost exploded but it all fitted in.
After having a small bite at the gate the plane left almost on time and from the air we had some nice views over the Florida coast line. And before I forget we had complimentary 30 minutes WiFi in our flight towards Detroit and Delta started with allowing usage of electronics from gate to gate! About 2 hours later we arrived in terminal A at Detroit and we walked towards our next gate. During the walk we discovered the Detroit City Mug at the Starbucks but our carry-ons where already full…
But I didn’t want to leave it there and decided to re-pack our stuff again and we managed to find enough place for a mug! So I walked back and brought us something to eat before we board, at that time it was already 15:00 and before we would get something to eat in the plane it would take at least a couple of hours. The flight to Amsterdam was pretty good the entertainment system was amazing and we both watched some cool movies The Internship (Danielle), Jobs (Sander), Planes (Danielle), Now you see me (Sander) , The Watch (Danielle) and a part from Armageddon (Danielle) and Iron Man 3 (Sander). The food wasn’t bad either, we both went for the chicken. After only 6 hours and 50 minutes we already arrived at Schiphol Amsterdam.
In Amsterdam we had to wait for about 2 hours before we could board our third and last plane back home. The plane was in the new KLM design which was nice and gave you some the feeling that you have more space. But the best thing was the breakfast, 2 sandwiches and something to drink. The sandwich was really delicious.
We landed at 9:15 at the Nürnberger airport, at 9:25 we had our suitcases, at 9:28 we passed through customs without any question asked, at 9:35 we found our car back and minutes later I was already racing the Autobahn! At exactly 10:00 we drove into our parking garage.
That leaves us to a last word of thanks to every reader of our blog, thanks for leaving comments, thanks to Richie and Denise for inviting us over and many thanks to our neighbours for taking care of our mailbox! From now on we will stop bothering you with daily FaceBook updates and sharing overloads with pictures!
Yesterday I was earlier at home as usual because a technician from the Deutsche Telekom would come and solve our DSL issues. But he didn’t… I was annoyed and started searching for a flight for our annual autumn/winter vacation. Not ideal with a unstable DL connection but we used our iPhones as Personal Hotspot as well.
We debated a long time about our trip schedule this time. A couple ideas involved layovers and other cities like New York, Atlanta, Tampa and different departure airports Munich, Frankfurt and Nuremberg. But after searching for about 3,5 hours we found the following trip:
Departing flight: (Total flight time 15:56 hours)
- Nuremberg > Amsterdam (KLM Fokker 70)
- Amsterdam > Detroit (Delta Airbus A330-300)
- Detroit > Miami (Delta Airbus A320-200)
Returning flights (Total flight time 15:15 hours):
- Orlando > Detroit (Delta Boeing 757-300)
- Detroit > (Delta Airbus A330-300)
- Amsterdam > Nuremberg (KLM Fokker 70)
And that for an excellent price more then 200€ cheaper as with all other airlines for the same flight times. The only cheaper flight we found was with a total flight time from over 30 hous one way. So we decided to book the flight we were both excited and could select our seats and then in the very last step of the booking process the price went up by 212€, it wasn’t clear why and I was lucky that I didn’t click on the ‘Next’ button otherwise we would have paid the higher amount.
I was very disappointed by this and decided to call the KLM Service Center in Germany but they were not available at 21:15 anymore. But I found out that the KLM Service Center in the Netherlands is available 24/7. So I used Skype to call them and after waiting a bit I got an employee on the phone which explained me that there was nothing he could. I didn’t liked this answer and explained that I’ve seen the same on all 3 possible flight options, he put me on hold and went to his manager to ask or there were possibilities and than our internet connection broke down…
So I could again and got another service agent on the phone and explained him all the same and again he couldn’t do anything for me and again I disagreed with him. He went to the manager and they found a solution which was a bit difficult for them to realise so he would call me back. And at 22:45 he gave me a call and told us he had even lower flight prices for us. So we decided to book! Thanks for the excellent service KLM, I’m so happy I can speak dutch!
So florida here we come again after being there in 2010 for the last time. Next will be booking hotels and/or a villa. can’t wait to do this and I hope that booking process will be a bit easier…
After months of preparation today it was finally the day that our USA Westcoast Trip was gonna begin.
At Thursday Danielle already had vacation and and prepared al lot for the trip. After packing the suitcases on Thursday evening we went to sleep pretty early, because at 04:30h Daniel, a colleague of Sander picked us up and brought us to Nürnberg Airport. At around 5 we arrived at the airport and it was already pretty busy. We had already checked in online so we only had to drop of our luggage.
After going through security and buying some breakfast we left on time, at 6:10h, for our flight to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. The aircraft was a Fokker 70 and at about 7:30h we arrived at AMS.
Our flight to Los Angeles did not depart until 09:50h so we had some time to buy some magazines and other stuff.
After we went through security and the bodyscanner the crew started boarding in time. We had seats at the emergency exit of the plane, a Boeing 747-400, and that was great. Especially because of the extra space for our legs.
The flight was ok, but it still took us 10,5 hours to get here.
Wenn we arrived at LAX we were the first to depart the aircraft, after that we had to wait extremely lang for our suitcases, but finally the arrive together. Even the border security was ok and did not took long.
Wenn we went to the Alamo rent-a-car to pick up our rental, we saw the Spaceshuttle Endavour landing at LAX on a Boing 747. This was very special and unique to see. Then we checked in at Alamo and get to pick out a car from the Fullsize SUV line. We picked a black Ford Explorer. It’s a great car and has many extra options on it. We will post a picture of the car tomorrow.
Then the trip began our trip. First thing to do was get out of L.A. and get on the Highway 1. We planned this because Highway 1 is parallel at the pacific coastline.
As you can see the views were beautiful. And we even stepped out of the car to checkout the water temperature. And it was very cold!
After visitng the City center of Santa Barbara to check-out the iPhone 5 at the Apple Store we went to eat burgers at Jack in the box at Solveng before we arrived at Santa Maria.
Quickly we bought some drinks and some food at Walmart in Santa Maria before we went to the hotel. Tonight we stay at the Holiday Inn Suites at Santa Barbara. the hotel looked better as on the online pictures and we stay in a room with a fully equipped kitchen. Ideal for a one night stay.
And after being underway for almost 25 hours we are finally there…
